Ranking the fights at UFC 288: Why Henry Cejudo's return tops the list – ESPN – ESPN

A UFC 288 pay-per-view event is set to go down this weekend in Newark — and if we’re being honest, this one is vulnerable to being overlooked.
The UFC promoted two PPV events in March, and both felt like signature events. UFC 285 featured the long-anticipated heavyweight debut of Jon Jones, while UFC 286 saw the third chapter of a rivalry between Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman (in the perfect setting of London, no less).
Last month, the UFC returned to Miami for the first time in 20 years and brought along the King of Miami, Jorge Masvidal, and one of the biggest stars of the sport in Israel Adesanya, for UFC 287.
There’s no question at all that UFC 288 (Saturday, 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+ PPV) brings a solid main card lineup — but it might lack the obvious storylines of its three predecessors. At least on the surface. This card is immensely important to multiple divisions. A few months or a few years from now, we might look back and say this card played a critical role in several narratives.
So, let’s have a bit of fun and rank the five main card bouts in terms of anticipation going into UFC 288.
I’ve already said this, but it bears repeating: Henry Cejudo could end up being fighter of the year in 2023. His accomplishments get overlooked — because of the “King of Cringe” gimmick he likes to portray — but this man was at the very top of the sport when he retired in 2020. If he is still at that level, anything is possible.

What if Cejudo beats Sterling, which he is currently a betting favorite to do, despite three years off? What if he then goes and beats Sean O’Malley, who has told me he will be in attendance Saturday? What if the UFC then allows him to move up to 145 pounds, which I believe they would, to challenge featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski?
Considering all of the elements at play, if Cejudo is able to pull off that run, it could go down as the greatest year in UFC history. That’s the level of accomplishment we’re talking about here.
Sterling, meanwhile, seems to finally be at peace with his status in the sport. He felt the need to explain himself after he won the championship by disqualification against Petr Yan in March 2021, but since then he’s gone on to beat Yan in a rematch and completely dismantle TJ Dillashaw. He still has critics but he seems to genuinely not care, which is a healthy place to be.
If Sterling beats Cejudo, I believe his year is set up similarly to Cejudo’s. Beat O’Malley. Featherweight title shot. And the only reason his year would be slightly less historically impressive than Cejudo’s is that Cejudo would be vying to become an unprecedented three-division UFC champ. Still, regardless of who it is, the winner is on path for potential fighter of the year.
Gilbert Burns sends Jorge Masvidal into retirement with a dominant performance from start to finish at UFC 287.
I won’t rehash the details behind this two-week-notice co-main event, as I did so late last week, but to put it briefly, it’s amazing this fight has come together at all, given the circumstances. And the fact these two are willing to risk their places in line in order to cement a title fight in their next appearance is admirable.
Beyond the story of how this fight came together, what are we going to see once it starts? It’s fascinating. Muhammad went from not having a fight booked at all to preparing for a five-rounder in essentially two weeks. He is cutting more than half of the weight he normally would for a regular fight. And his style weaponizes pace. Will that weapon be there?
The winner is going to fight for the welterweight title the next time we see him — depending on circumstances, either late 2023 or early 2024. Possibly in March 2024, if the UFC keeps to its recent schedule of visiting London during that month. Whenever it happens, we’ll be talking about the winner of this fight as a title contender for the rest of the year.
There’s a storyline here that some might not be aware of. These two were booked to fight in December, but Evloev was forced to withdraw with an injury.
That led to Mitchell taking to social media to post a video in which he said he had “never been so harassed” in his life, as Evloev had repeatedly called him out to accept a fight and even, according to Mitchell, sent him smiling selfies behind the scenes, daring him to take the matchup.
Mitchell was supposed to face Jonathan Pearce on this card, but Pearce withdrew due to injury. Evloev had been healthy for a while and was looking for a fight date, but the UFC was struggling to book him. After what happened in December, some in Evloev’s camp didn’t expect Mitchell to accept him as an opponent. Instead, Mitchell took it immediately and told ESPN he was happy with the way it all played out.
Evloev is a sleeper to win the featherweight championship at some point. He flies relatively under the radar thanks to his grinding, steadfast style — all six of his wins in the UFC have come via decision — but there’s no question about his talent. If he wins here, this could be the fight to propel him to a position where higher-ranked fighters have to face him.
A little bit of heat and stakes in this 145-pound fight, between two guys who are still seeking their first UFC title shot.
Gracie, an ADCC grappling champion and son of Rickson Gracie, hasn’t been in MMA news much over the last four years. He won his UFC debut in 2019 by submitting Alex Caceres (who, by the way, has since risen to a No. 15 ranking in the featherweight division), but then suffered a massive setback in a loss to Cub Swanson. When the UFC announced this matchup, it was met with genuine surprise.
And honestly, that accounts for much of the appeal going into this one. Mystery. Gracie’s level of submission grappling represents an ace card in any division, but his loss to Swanson four years ago showed a lack of overall skill and connectivity to the rest of his game. Has that been shored up? Or is this the exact Gracie we saw four years ago?
The opponent selection is super interesting, in that Jourdain is known for entertaining fights. He’s only won Fight of the Night once in the UFC, but he’s been on a short list of candidates for the bonus multiple times. How will that translate to Gracie’s style — as it feels very safe to say, Gracie will look to take him down or at least latch onto him in some way on the feet?
Jessica Andrade gets Amanda Lemos to tap out in Round 1 and everyone is shocked.
The intrigue here really is on Andrade, because it’s fair to question what version of her we’ll see. Andrade, at her best, is championship caliber. She held the belt, briefly, in 2019 and has fought for it in multiple weight classes. This is already her third appearance in 2023. She looked amazing in January, defeating Lauren Murphy — and very average in February, in a loss to Erin Blanchfield.
Andrade is on a new contract (thanks to her willingness to take the fight against Blanchfield on short notice), and sometimes, that can result in a little bit of complacency. This isn’t negative talk, it’s just reality. When a fighter has held the belt, fought for the belt numerous times and then gets rewarded with a lucrative contract, questions around hunger and improvement can swirl. Based on her last performance, there is some question as to how hungry Andrade still is for the belt itself.
She’s a rarity in that she legitimately is viewed as a title challenger in multiple weight classes at the same time, but that will fade if she doesn’t look good here. And keep in mind, “look good” is the right way to phrase that. Even if she wins but looks unimpressive against Yan, there won’t be much hype around Andrade. She’ll be in a strong position, but hype can matter in this sport.

MANILA (Philippines) – The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is headed towards the Second Round and the Classification Games. A day off sounds like a good opportunity to update the Power Rankings.
And let’s just say they needed updating.

The Power Rankings are in no way an official ranking system but do represent the assessment from the author for each team of finishing high or low at the summit in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, which tips off on August 25. This fourth volume of the Rankings should be considered as an overview with the First Round behind us.

The potential for all five of these teams is off the charts. No wonder the entire world is talking about these guys as one of the biggest positive surprises of the World Cup.

So, so close… Coach Pero Cameron will probably feel a bit unlucky because of the draw which saw them square up against the United States as the biggest favorite to win it all, and against a perennial medal contender in Greece. But they put up a fight, almost stunned coach Dimitris Itoudis and his crew, and earned a standing ovation at the end of the first round in the Mall of Asia Arena.

All of us who had a chance to witness Japan’s women’s basketball team in major events from 2017 to 2021 had a feeling this could happen. Coach Tom Hovasse is simply a genius, no other way to describe that the man who led the women’s team to the Olympic Final also managed to battle for the Second Round here despite not his superstar Rui Hachimura. Young guards, a lot of passing, a lot of shooting… You’ll hear about Japan in the future, no doubt.

Could they be a Poland? Or a Czech Republic? Because back in 2019, Poland and Czech Republic both reached the Quarter-Finals even though it was their maiden World Cup, for both. Actually, they are going to need to pull off a Czech Republic, because the Czech were the only #2 seed from the First Round to make it through to the Quarter-Finals. Georgia have Germany and Australia up next and the least we can say is that this will be very difficult.

See here, this is the big difference between being there and getting there. Montenegro were neck and neck with Lithuania, trading blows, staying close for a half, but then they started missing wide open layups and threes. That’s the “getting there” part. The “being there” part was Lithuania, who punished every single Montenegro mistake.
That’s the experience of tens or hundreds of games like this already played in Lithuania’s history, compared to Montenegro’s lack of big game experience. Oh, one more thing. Nikola Vucevic is the best player nobody talks about.

Yago Santos is 24, he’s coming off of a fabulous German League winning campaign, where he was the Finals MVP, and in the game against Cote d’Ivoire he became the first Brazilian player with 20+ points and 10+ assists since FIBA introduced assists to the official boxscores in 1994. Aco was right all along!

The problem with that loss to the Dominican Republic? Italy now know they probably have to defeat Serbia to have a chance of reaching the Quarter-Finals. Feels like we’ve seen a few of do-or-die games between Italy and Serbia recently, with Italy winning all of them – like at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade in 2022, like at the FIBA EuroBasket 2022 Round of 16, like in the tuneup games this summer. They are 3-0, people. We had them in the Top 10 this entire time, we saw it coming when they prevented the 2019 runners-up Argentina from qualifying, and all of that was before anybody knew how a superstar such as Karl-Anthony Towns would fit in. Guess what, it was as smooth as it gets.

Not a lot of people talked about Serbia at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, and you know, maybe that actually suits them better.
No pressure of expectations, just getting out there and enjoying the Bogdan Bogdanovic show. People talk about FIBA Patty or FIBA Fournier… But don’t tell us you forgot about FIBA Bogdan. One of the most pleasant experiences in international basketball.

Luka Doncic is averaging exactly 30.0 points per game after the First Round in 2023. The last player to average 30 or more in World Cup history? Oscar Schmidt back in 1990, when he had 34.6 points per game. Feels like any time Luka is entering a global event, Oscar’s records are in danger.
Slovenia warmed up nicely for the Second Round, not leaving a glimpse of hope to anybody to endanger their perfect record. Australia and Germany up next and that sounds awesome!

This part was supposed to say something like, “the defending champs are defending;” but it turns out, this version of Spain is actually attacking. Sergio Scariolo’s men have scored 85 or more in each of their first three games, with a variety of players who can fuel that offense.
We’re going to have the same conundrum like at the FIBA EuroBasket 2022. If Spain win, who’s the MVP? Is it Willy? Is it Juancho? Is it Aldama? Is it Juan Nunez? Do they care? They don’t. They just do the most Spanish thing and win as a team.

This tweet is important, because only three of the 18 champions have reached gold despite not winning their group. And Canada not only won the group, they won it with so much authority that it looked scary at times.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looks like he’s in fourth gear, and it’s still two gears too much for anybody else at this level, while the entire team is shooting 55 percent from the field and 43 percent from deep. Scary sounds about right!

Admit it, you looked at the last edition of the Power Rankings and said, “LOL Germany at 2, this is ridiculous!” Well, a Franz Wagner-less win over Australia probably changed your mind, especially because Dennis Schroder has every intention to make the MVP debate even more interesting.
Germany are enjoying their finest post-Nowitzki days, even Anthony Edwards said Germany gave them the most problems during the preparation period this summer. A re-match between USA and Germany would be… Sorry, could not finish sentence, we were drooling over the keyboard and it died.

It’s a bit cold in the Mall of Asia Arena, because of the windmill called Anthony Edwards firing on all cylinders! He’s everything you imagine him to be, and he’s confident enough to say out loud that he’s going to chase Kevin Durant’s 38-point record in the national team jersey.
Add to the mix the lineup tweaks by coach Steve Kerr and his staff, add more greatness by fan favorite Austin Reaves, and you get a clear favorite to re-take the World Cup title.

WBC orders Shakur Stevenson, Frank Martin lightweight title fight, source says – ESPN – ESPN

Former super world champion Anselmo “Chemito” Moreno and his wife Rousse Laguna presented a six fight pro boxing event on Friday night at the Centro de Combates in Panama City, to continue their campaign to rescue the Young local talent.
Super lightweights Fernando “Pantera” Martínez (6-2, 2 KOs) and Samir Cuentas (2-3, 0 KOs) starred a very tactical 6-round fight, with Martínez escaping with a majority decision.
The dislocation of the right shoulder of Carlos Montenegro (3-2-2, 0 KOs) exactly one minute into the fight, ended the great expectations of the co-main event, with a TKO victory for Daniel “El Chato” Lezcano (5-2-1, 3 KOs).
Flyweight Angel Bethancourt (3-0, 3 KOs) temporarily moved up to Bantam to stop Marcos Arrieta (0-8) by TKO at 2:45 of round number 2.
On his pro debut, super flyweight Jeffrey Martínez scored a first round knockout (2:55) over Fernando Lorenzo (0-3).
Welterweight sensation, Harvin Aguirre (7-0, 5 KOs) remains undefeated after beating veteran Barnie Argüelles ( 12-13, 8 KOs) at 1:55 of the very first round.
Also on welterweights, Josue Alvarado (4-1, 1 KO) stopped Oriel Bethancourt (0-4) at 0:54 of round number one.
