Unbeaten super welterweight Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas Jr. (11-0, 11 KOs), son of former world champion Fernando Vargas, was victorious when Andre “Thunder” Byrd (10-14-2, 1 KO) wasn’t allowed to continue after round three on Saturday night at the famed Cow Palace in the San Francisco suburb of Daly City.
Super featherweight Leonardo Alcala (22-5, 15 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over local favorite Andy “El Tiburon” Vences (23-5-2, 12 KOs). In round five, Vences was deducted a point for a shot to the back of the head. Alcala took five minutes to recover. Scores were 78-73, 78-73, 76-75.
Welterweight Evan “Yung Holy” Holyfield (11-1, 7 KOs), son of former world champion Evander Holyfield, edged Juan Meza Moreno (4-3, 3 KOs) over six rounds. Holyfield dropped Moreno in round five and that made the difference in a 57-56, 57-56, 57-56 unanimous decision.
So sad to see Andy Vences lose to a fighter like this. He really took a turn for the worst when Top Rank dropped him. It’s about time he hangs them up, maybe he gets sent to the slaughter a few times first. But his career is going nowhere.
Still a little ways to go and some more time to settle into it but these Vargas boys could really make a name for themselves.
When you’re beating guys 10-14, it appears that way. They are simply doing what they are supposed to be doing against a man with a 10-14 record.
Vargas is almost the same age as Tim Tszyu and look who he is being matched with

Let’s see how well he does when he gets power matched. His youngest brother fights for ESPN / Bob Arum. I wonder why Bob did not sign this guy and his other brother?
Vargas Jr. seems like a good kid. All kidding aside, I want to see how well he does when he starts getting power matched. Clearly, this was not a power match.
Evan “Yung Holy” Holyfield better go find a job, he’s in the wrong profession, and dad knows it but the son keeps pushing the issue he’s better than dad!
That’s how you build a kids career by getting them decent fights to win.. Build up their confidence in the ring not throwing them in with hard opponents right off the bat
Time to fight better opposition for Vargas Jr, not champions just better fighters..
