Boxing News: Teofimo-Taylor was still in doubt after ten » July 4, 2023 – Fight News

After ten rounds of action between WBO jr welterweight champion Josh Taylor and Teofimo Lopez, judges Steve Gray and Joseph Pasquale had it even at 95-95. Judge Benoit Roussel had Lopez ahead 97-93 on the third card.
Lopez closed strongly and swept the last two rounds on all three cards to win 115-113, 115-113 and 117-111. However, had Taylor managed to win either round eleven or twelve, he would have retained the title with a draw.
I’m just happy that the correct person won, but the fight that I saw was not that close. No way Taylor was a round away from breaking even and just two away from actually winning.
Fight scoring is very interesting. To me Teo clearly got the better of Taylor in this fight. However at the end I had it 116-113 for Lopez. The thing is I gave 3 of the first 4 rounds to Taylor. I had round 3 even. I also gave round 10 to Taylor. Now I know people can argue many of my choices in those rounds but I think they would be hard pressed to say Lopez won any of those rounds in a definitive manner. I think he did win the other 7 rounds in a definitive manner. So this is where it gets tricky…Lopez clearly won 7 rounds without question but the other 5 were close. I can see where it could be 115 113, however I can also see 118 110. Two people can agree on 9 out of 12 rounds yet have scores that are that different. I think people understand intellectually what I am saying…there is nothing genius about it. However I think the perception is that Lopez clearly got the better of the fight overall so therefore the scores should not be close. However if 5 of the rounds are close with not a lot of separation, the score can end up being close if Taylor gets the benefit of the doubt on those close rounds. Canelo -GGG 3 was like that in my opinion. To me if there are no knockdowns a fighter must win 7 rounds clearly to ensure victory. In this case Lopez did that. As did Canelo in the third GGG fight. This is why I do not complain that much about judging. The person who got the better of it overall in a fight is not always what the score reflects.
Why in the world was Teo wearing a Bud Light hat though?
Because he sits down to pee
That too
Lol he had the double Pedo look with Bud and Disney Lmao. He deserved to lose for wearing that shite
Huge Congrats to Teo for putting on a great performance great fight! That bud light hat needs to go in the trash tho. Come on Teo I thought you new better.
So a bud light drinker is a pedophile?
Simple, because Bud Light paid lots of money for him to wear the hat.
That means he sold out..
I guess all the people who thumbs me down support pedophilia..
Maybe those people who are hating on bud light are nothing but bud light drinkers.
He’s been sponsored by Bud Light since 2021 at a $100,000 a year, when lot’s of people were still drinking that awful tasting beer.
I wonder if they’re getting subsidized by the Biden Administration since they can’t even give away their beer for free. What money are they paying him with?
Money deal before cons got silly.
Maybe he signed the contract.
Did I say that out loud?
I was saying the same thing….smh
Why did Judas betray Christ? It’s all about the money.
Well yes, but also it was written that Jesus would be betrayed, die for the sins of the world, to rise in 3 days. It was more to it than money.
Because they pay him to wear it. Sponsorship.
The scorecards for this fight should have been at least 116-112, but wider if the beating that Taylor took in the 11 and 12 would have been scored 10-8 each round. What aberration could have been declaring this fight a draw!
What a joke, 117-111 was about right. The tartan tornedo looked like a tartan calm storm, Mr Buchanon is rolling in his grave
Outrageous. Steve Gray and Joe Pasquale need to be investigated. It just never stops. At least the right guy won but it wasn’t even close going into the eleventh round.
Who would investigate that was not in on it? 118-110 would be a correct score.
But the guy who scored it for Haney 116-112 is doing just fine. Wow, the double standard is palpable.
115-113 was awfully generous to taylor I thought.
you know i had predicted Taylor would destroy Lopez but i was waaaay wrong either Lopez looked way stronger or Taylor looked lathergic and drained either way good win for Lopez now all he has to do is fire his dad and hire a real trainer he needs alot of improvement still to be top dog at 140
He loses to Prograis who is still showing no signs of slowing down. Rogarou would have knocked Taylor out last night, in less than eight rounds to boot.
Wow. The judges were keeping it close enough to pull an okeedoke if needed. I’m preaching to the choir, but we need an overseeing review board for these judges.
“Get your @55es in here and show us how you came up with these scores”
A national boxing commission will do it.
Would’ve could’ve should’ve but didn’t who cares
I was cheering for Taylor and had trouble finding 4 rounds for him. I’d have no issue with a smart judge (such a thing?)who’d go 10-8 on the rounds where Lopez ran him out of the ring, which need to be rewarded and not considered equal with a pedestrian 10-9 round.
I was also pulling for Taylor. 115-113 is an absolute joke. Taylor wasn’t landing and was barely throwing. Lopez was on his back foot a lot, but was not in any way “running” from Taylor.
If you are being generous to Taylor, he won three or four rounds, tops. Four is extremely generous.
That said, Lopez didn’t score a knockdown, let alone a knockout. Not sure he has the firepower to rule the division as presently constituted, let alone if Davis and Stevenson move up.
Boring fight Should have him rematch Loma. So Loma can retire him
Considering how Lopez looked against Martin in his last outing, I thought Taylor wouldn’t have much difficulty with him. I erroneously based that on how his fights against Prograis and Ramirez. However, I failed to take into account just how poorly the Scot performed against Catterall – I had forgotten Jack dropped Taylor in that fight – and the 16 month layoff.
Taylor fought Teo’s fight rather than sticking his jab and using his height and moving away. He let Lopez into his head and fought a moronic fight. One punch, miss, clinch, stand still. One punch, miss, clinch, stand still.
That being said, Lopez didn’t impress me either. He should have been able to knock the rapidly fading Taylor out at any time past the 7th. He landed big shots late on multiple occasions and could not take Taylor out. Now had Taylor gone for broke in the 11th, the fight would have unjustly been a draw. Teo’s trust in the judges nearly backfired and it doesn’t appear that he has carried his power up with him. Of course, that power may be not what had been advertised in the first place. That early Richard Commey KO isn’t as impressive now that we know he’s been a journeyman that looked good against an overrated Robert Easter.
Interesting that his corner said Taylor would keep his title if he won the eleventh and twelfth rounds-must have known he owned the judges. Just so one sided that judges couldn’t find a way to gift him.
I was thinking that as well after reading this article.
Wait, so a virtually unknown trainer and a Scotsman were able to bribe judges in Teo’s backyard? How does that work exactly? I’m waiting.
I never said anything about bribes. I responded to the initial post because after reading this article, the fight was a draw after ten, and Taylor’s corner said in-between the 10th and 11th that he would win if he took the championship rounds. It sounded delusional and absurd (and reminded me of Chris Algieri’s corner saying they were about to unleash the tiger, only to end up being pummelled more by Manny Pacquiao.
It’s possible that someone in Taylor’s corner got a look at the master scorecard. It’s possible the fight looked different at ringside than on TV.
I’ve always thought the ring apron was the worst spot for a judge to sit. Too close to the action, and you only have a view of the one side you’re sitting on, not to mention you’re looking up. For example, is it easier to see your hand if it’s two inches from your eyes or if it’s one foot from your eyes?
There should be four judges sitting at ring height about four or five rows back on every side of the ring, and the ref should the in-ring judge. Five judges from the five best angles. And that entire argument of judging a fight would interfere with officiating a fight for a ref, that’s bunk. It didn’t affect it for the decades it was done (and still done in the UK for certain bouts). Sorry for the epic post. Just didn’t want you waiting for a response any longer. I know you have a large agenda to fit into a very tight schedule.
Of course the fight was not close. Teofimo had at least 5 points advantage. Bad judges again. The sickness of boxing nowaydays.
Never been much of a Teo fan. I am now.
It doesn’t matter what the scorecards say. Not impressed by the street talking Lopez. He acts like he’s a world beater, then gets in there and manages a decision. He was better than Taylor to win this fight, but so what? I don’t expect much from him as a “champion” and don’t consider him to be a great fighter. Not surprised that he moved up to 140 to avoid the real competition.
If he fights Prograis anytime within the next 12 months he will get knocked out for certain. That’s my guy at 140 and I think he’s the best at super lightweight.

A recent Channel 4 documentary titled “UNTOLD: The Secret World of Fight Clubs" delves into the shocking and underground trend of bare-knuckle fighting prevalent across the UK. The documentary exposes the gritty reality of these no-rule brawls, featuring participants like Alex Etherington, who not only took part in such a brutal event but also lost his ear in the process. Etherington, who now keeps his detached ear in a jar, shares his firsthand experience, providing insight into the world of these unrestricted fighting rings.
In an underground fight club documentary by Channel 4 titled “UNTOLD: The Secret World of Fight Clubs" a shocking trend of bare-knuckle fighting across the UK was exposed. The documentary reveals the gritty reality of these no-rule brawls. Among the participants was Alex Etherington, who took part in this disturbing trend fight, and lost his ear. He now keeps his detached ear in a jar. Etherington recounted his experience with these unrestricted fighting rings.
Speaking to the Sun, Alex said, “I felt lucky to get on King Of The Streets. It’s quite sought after. I only got on it because my friend vouched for me. It got half a million views on YouTube and I got around 7,000 followers on Instagram overnight. I didn’t know what was going to happen because it was my first No Rules fight. I couldn’t really have a game-plan really. I didn’t know what to expect."
Alex Etherington faced Bachir ‘Bash’ Fakhouri in the fight and recalling the fight, he said, “He was desperate for a win as he’d come off a few losses. Ten seconds in, he bit my ear off. I didn’t know it had come off at first. Blood was trickling down my face. He wouldn’t let go of my hair. I ended up getting whiplash from it. He was going for my eyes." Eye gouging is permitted during the fights, although according to Alex, they’re typically halted before the pressure causes any harm.
Alex went to the hospital after the fight where doctors informed him that his torn ear couldn’t be reattached as “it wasn’t a clean cut. There was a risk of infections too, so there was no chance. It’s quite a big chunk, about the width of your pinkie finger." Despite the severe injury, the fighter expressed that it doesn’t bother him. Upon returning home, Alex showed his girlfriend, Fizza Khan, the torn ear, who insisted he keep it. Interestingly, Alex decided to store his piece of ear in a jar filled with an alcohol solution, following advice from someone and placed it in the kitchen on a shelf.
Meanwhile, Alex Etherington refrains from disclosing his fight earnings but the estimated payouts are around £2,000 (approximately Rs 2 lakh). He clarified that fighters receive compensation only when the win and highlighted that the amount isn’t enough to become a full time fighter. For Alex, engaging in this activity wasn’t about establishing a career but rather fulfilling a bucket list wish. He expressed satisfaction due to lack of rules and limitations, describing the experience as a taste of genuine freedom that left him excited for weeks after the fight.

Monty Williams rips Pistons for lack of 'fight' during skid – ESPN
Detroit Pistons coach Monty Williams called out his team for its lack of “fight” after another blowout loss, saying his players are not honoring “the organization and the jersey.”
Williams delivered a brief but passionate statement to reporters Monday night after Detroit’s 126-107 home loss to the Washington Wizards in a matchup of the NBA’s two worst teams.
It was the fourteenth consecutive loss for the Pistons (2-15), who now own the NBA’s worst record and have not won a game in a month. The lowly Wizards (3-14), who had not won since Nov. 8, shot 51% from the floor and had seven scorers in double figures against the Pistons, who have lost three of their past four games by a least 19.
“That wasn’t fight on the floor,” Williams said. “That wasn’t Pistons basketball by any stretch of the imagination. That’s what this is — we have to have people that honor the organization and the jersey by competing at a high level every night.
“I’m not talking about execution, just competing. That wasn’t it, and that’s on me.”
In a postgame media session that lasted only one minute, Williams opened by saying he was “very” disappointed with the loss and described the Pistons’ overall spirit in the game as “poor.”
Williams told reporters before the game that the Pistons held a players-only meeting Friday, saying that “accountability” was a key talking point and that he loves working with the young roster.
But Williams was much harsher in his tone after the loss.
“It’s just a level of growing up on this team, maturity, understanding what game-plan discipline is — all the stuff we talk about all the time,” he said. “It’s enough talking.”
Third-year forward Isaiah Livers said he agreed with Williams’ assessment.
“There are a lot of little things we can talk about, but we just didn’t play hard,” Livers said. “Every team has roles, and it feels like none of us are playing our roles to the best of our abilities.”
Star guard Cade Cunningham, who admitted last week that the Pistons are “bad” in a candid assessment of the team, told the Detroit Free Press that he and his teammates are making mistakes because they are “not physical enough or not aggressive enough.”
“We all wanna win really bad,” Cunningham told the Free Press. “Everybody’s doing it out of the spirit of that — wanting to win, wanting to do what’s best for the team.
“I think we need more aggressive mess ups. Where we’re struggling right now is slip ups where we’re not physical enough or not aggressive enough. That’s what we need to lean towards instead of trying not to press.”
The 14-game losing streak ties the second-longest in Pistons franchise history, and their schedule does not get easier in the short term. After Wednesday’s home game against the Lakers (10-8), the Pistons travel to New York the next day to face the Knicks (9-7) before returning home Saturday to host the Cavaliers (9-8).
If they cannot win one of those games, the Pistons will be in danger of approaching the longest skid in their history — a 21-game losing streak that bridged the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons.
“We play great stretches, and then we’ve had crazy bad stretches where we dig ourselves in too deep of a hole,” Cunningham told the Free Press. “That’s it right there — it’s just holding each other accountable and when we do feel it start to slip, having the mental stamina to stay together, stay connected.”
