In the best fight of the night, middleweight Ian Green (17-2, 11 KOs) retained his WBA Continental Americas belt by ten round split decision against previously undefeated Alexander Castro (11-1, 9 KOs) in a featured bout on the Guidry-Stiverne undercard Saturday night at Casino Miami Jai-Alai in Miami, Florida. Castro started fast and battered and bloodied Green in round one. Good exchanges in round two. It became a battle of attrition after that with both fighters hurting each other. In the end, scores were 96-94, 96-94 Green, 96-94 Castro.
“My plan was to box,” said Green. “But after he cut me in the first round he tried to get into my mental, so I had to bring it to him and fight. First round he was fighting hard, so I just kept my guard tight and went forward.”
Welterweight Tre’Sean Wiggins (15-5-3, 8 KOs) retained his NABA title with workmanlike ten round unanimous decision against Nigel Fennel (13-2, 8 KOs). Wiggins won by scores of 99-91, 97-93, 98-92 in a bout that never heated up.
“I had to stay smart and stay patient,” said Wiggins. “It’s not always the most entertaining fight, but I needed to be smart because it’s a high-level chess match. I had to stick to my game plan and get the job done.”
Other Bouts:
Unbeaten super lightweight Raynel Mederos (8-0, 2 KOs) against Nelson Morales (3-2, 0 KOs). Close fight. Morales dropped Mederos in round two, but Mederos rallied to win 58-55, 58-55, 57-56.
Unbeaten light heavyweight Kenmon Evans (10-0-1, 3 KOs) coasted to a six round unanimous decision over Cleotis Pendarvis (21-14-2, 9 KOs). Scores were 60-54, 60-54, 59-55.
Pro debuting middleweight Alex Esponda needed just 74 seconds to crush Carlos Cruz (2-10, 1 KO). A body shot finished Cruz.
Pro debuting light heavyweight Brayan Leon Salgado needed just 58 seconds to demolish Salome Flores Torres (1-8, 0 KOs). Body shots finished Torres.
Pro debuting junior welterweight Darian Castro outpointed Ryan Schwartzberg (1-9-2, 1 KO) over six rounds. Scores were 60-54 3x.
The Colombian boxer Alex Castro was clearly robbed. While Ian Green did some wonderful things in there, he did not win this fight. Castro aggressively won at three of the early rounds. He changed his tactics started to box in the middle rounds and won some more and easily won the last two rounds. Judges were bad.
