In Céline Sciamma's beautiful rendering of love, Adèle Haenel and Noémie Merlant paint a breathless romance. Set in France in the 1770s, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is the story of Marianne, a brilliant painter commissioned to create a portrait of Héloïse, a bride-to-be. Strictly advised to not let Héloïse know about the portrait, Marianne has no choice but to observe her from a distance, catch glimpses of her face, and paint her by night.
As artist and muse, their connection blossoms in fleeting moments of comprehension that prove to be way richer than any overdone tropes that have come before. It follows Ethan Hawke’s Jesse and his adorable wanderlust finding a worthy companion in Julia Delpy’s Celine, who is not just a curious soul herself but also quite receptive of Jesse’s ideas. From the moment their eyes meet, you can feel that there’s electricity between them.

Although a fairly recent entry to the game, Red, White & Royal Blue has shook the audience and the internet by showing just where and how queer cinema peaked. Not your typical boy-meets-boy, the movie follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, the first son of the United States, and the spare prince of England, Henry Fox, going from can’t-stand-each-other to can’t-stay-away-from-each-other in a matter of minutes.
Being important to their own countries and the reputation of their families, their love first blossoms in the shadows, but eventually they find the courage to face the world. However, it is the chemistry between Taylor Zakhar Peres and Nicholas Galitzine that really makes all the difference. From lingering stares to steamy caresses, their love is on display fully and freely. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
