Super-middleweight Adonis Stevenson may have shot in the rankings in most of the major sanctioning bodies by virtue of his solid destruction of Aaron Pryor Jr. last weekend, but promoter Yvon Michel made clear that the hard-hitting southpaw still has his sights set on IBF champion and fellow Montrealer Lucian Bute.
“Our target is the number two spot in the IBF,” Michel told Fightnews this weekend. The power-punching Stevenson was moved into the #14 spot at the recent WBC convention but with a clear way to the top and Bute , Michel believes now is the time. “Our goal is that as soon as possible to take any opponent that we can. Hopefully that is what Adonis will be fighting for in his next fight.”
Stevenson had called out Bute following his recent win but Michel said he wasn’t content to sit and wait for an opportunity to be tossed his way by his rival Montreal promoter Interbox and instead would actively pursue a top ranking and a mandatory position within the IBF that has both #1 and #2 spots vacant. The top position was to have been decided this weekend but the scheduled fight between Librado Andrade and Donovon George was called off at the last minute. No word if that battle is expected to be rescheduled.
Under current operating procedures in the IBF, with the two top spots vacant in the division there would be two elimination fights with the winners facing each other for the mandatory position.
